Central Kansas Town Says Annual Event Is Back On

Friday, May 22, 2009

The central-Kansas town of Lehigh will hold its annual Memorial Day Antique Engine Show after all.

Lehigh Mayor Mike Geiman had decided to cancel the town's only yearly celebration after health issues kept a key person from helping this year. Organizers also had trouble finding volunteers.

But when a short announcement about the cancelations was printed earlier this month in the Hillsboro Free Press, pleas came from people as far away as California and Florida.

Lehigh's postmaster Ruth Coyle said many of the letters and phone calls were from graduates of Lehigh, Durham and Hillsboro high schools. Lehigh and Durham schools closed in the 1960s.

Now the event is back on for Monday.
