Cargill Beef donated Thursday $270,000 in food and cash to the Kansas Food Bank Warehouse Inc.
The funds will be divvied between The Lord’s Diner, Inter-Faith Ministries, Catholic Charities Inc., Positive Directions, Our Lady of Guadalupe, Youth Horizons Inc., Meals on Wheels and the United Methodist Ministries.
“We are making this donation to help address immediate shortfalls of food for families in need,” said John Keating, Cargill Beef president, in a written statement.
This year, the Kansas Food Bank has seen its demand increase 30 percent, but food donations are flat, says Brian Walker, president and CEO of the Kansas Food Bank.
The food bank, he says, has purchased more food than it has in years past to account for the difference.
The food bank expects to distribute more than eight million pounds of food this year, up more than a million pounds from a year ago.
“This donation couldn’t come at a better time,” Walker says. “It’s going to benefit a number of organizations in our service area.”
