Former Sen. Bob Dole has donated $150,000 to the Kansas Historical Society.

A spokeswoman for the society says the money will be used to help weather the economic downturn. The money also may be used to assist the William Allen White House State Historic Site in Emporia and the Fort Hays State Historic Site in Hays.

The donation was made late last year.

Dole says in a statement that he is proud of what the society is doing to preserve the state's history.

The Russell native represented Kansas in the U.S. Senate for 27 years before his failed presidential bid.
