What do a grandmother and a Navy SEAL have in common? They can both benefit from exercise with the Greater Wichita YMCA’s new TRX (Tension Resistance Exercise) suspension training systems.

Treadmills, barbells and weight benches aren’t easily transported to wharf-side warehouses, urban safe-houses and submarines. That’s why a group of Navy SEALS developed a suspension training harness to stay in peak condition while carrying out missions. Using what they had available, they gathered a few lengths of parachute webbing, stitched them together with boat repair tools, and began exercising. Today’s version of their TRX system is much more refined, but it still engages all the muscle groups for a complete total-body workout.

“We’re pumped to bring TRX to the Y, because it’s a great addition to any exercise routine,” commented Rachel Stuhlsatz, Greater Wichita YMCA Health and Fitness Director. “It looks difficult, but it can be used by all ages and fitness levels. Each movement develops your core muscles, strength, balance, flexibility, and joint stability using your own body weight for resistance. But what’s really great is that all you have to do is move your feet closer or further from the suspension bar to adjust the resistance for your fitness level.”

This new personal and group training option is now available at most area Y locations. Personal and group training fees apply. Monthly group training rate is $37 per person to train for an hour each week with 3-4 people. Individual and partner sessions are also available (pricing varies based on the number of sessions). Individual sessions are available for as low as $32 per hour and partner sessions are available for as low as $25 per hour.
