A one-month fundraiser will benefit the K-9 Unit of the Wichita Police Department (WPD). Through October, Ribbit Computers will donate $50 for every computer sold and $15 for every service request to the K-9 Unit.

Officials from the City of Wichita and Ribbit Computers announced the K-9 fundraiser during a Thursday morning news conference at City Hall. Police Chief Norman Williams and Ribbit Computers owner Alex Harb joined Wichita Mayor Carl Brewer.

“These unique animals play a critical role in sniffing out bad elements in our community,” Mayor Brewer said. “The dogs are especially helpful in WPD’s battle against illegal drugs.

Public safety is a huge priority for the Wichita City Council. This kind of generosity is always appreciated and always needed.”

WPD has five K-9 teams that assist with drug investigations and educational activities across the Wichita area. The teams have helped seize drugs such as cocaine, crack-cocaine, marijuana, methamphetamines and others. During the past two years, 483 pounds of marijuana, 97 pounds of cocaine and 19 pounds of methamphetamine have been detected and seized with the aid of the K-9 teams.

“The illegal use of drugs has a tremendous negative impact on our community,” Chief Williams said. “The related violence can devastate our families, friends and neighbors. As we continue our aggressive efforts to address illegal drug trafficking and usage, the Ribbit Computers’ donations will help us meet those important public safety goals.”

Ribbit Computers stores are located at 921 E. Douglas Ave., 438 S. Rock Road, 240 S. West St #55, 3433 N. Rock Rd #105 and 2616 N. Maize Rd Suite #104.

Donations will be used for expenses such as veterinary services, food supplies and K-9 equipment. Expenses for the unit’s four patrol dogs are funded solely through donations. WPD’s general fund budget pays for salaries and vehicle rental. For more information, please go to www.wichita.gov or watch Cox cable Channel 7.
