Planeview looks as if it will get a new grocery store with the developer getting tax incentives.
The Wichita City Council approved the area of George Washington Boulevard and Pawnee as a special tax district, in turn developers will build a Save-A-Lot grocery store. Shoppers will pay an extra 2% sales tax, with the money going to pay off the developer's debt.
"I want to do something good for the community," developer Rob Snyder said.
Many Planeview residents say they don't have cars and have to walk to the store for food. They want one in the neighborhood.
Several people spoke out against the plan including Mike Collins who co-owns the Checkers Food Store about a mile away.
"While we are not opposed to growth, this gives an unfair advantage to local merchants," Collins said.
The council will have a second public hearing and vote before the special tax district is approved. If all goes as planned, the new store will be open in the spring.
Disclosure note...KAKE news anchor Susan Peters is married to developer Rob Snyder.
