So you all probably have heard by now the report on the man accused of breaking into a family's garage and having sex with their Rottweiler. The man pleaded guilty and was actually on probation for a similar crime in Reno county. The story was discovered at the daily police media briefings.
KAKE management made the decision to run several small stories on the case while other media outlets did much larger treatments involving reporters interviewing the dog's owner. Just our small stories generated several viewer complaints that this story wasn't really news and was inappropriate to air.
I can only imagine what the other stations heard. We regularly cover stories that involve sexual content like rapes, indecent liberties with children, etc and don't receive this kind of response. Does the fact the victim was a dog change it's news value? How do you think the story should have been handled? Was the story even worth airing? What should the media do with stories that contain sexual content?
As always, I love to hear from you!
