Should Cell Phones be Banned While Driving?

In my previous blog I mentioned the state looking at a bill that would ban those under 18 from using a cellphone while driving.   But in other states legislators are looking at other options.   A google news search shows the ideas range from no cell phone use just in school zones to only hands-free cell phones allowed.  Many lawmakers are even asking for penalitles that include fines and or a suspension of license.    Of course the biggest argument against these ideas is,  will eating and driving be outlawed next?  What do you think about the issue?

I think that teens should be banned from use of a cell phone while driving they don't have enough experience yet to drive while having something distract them. I should know i'm a teen to. Otherwise the use of a cell phone is handy if not in a car at least to report an accident. So i think only teens should be banned.

I think cell phones shouldnt be banned while driving cause there is also many other distractoins in a car. so dont do it. Plz im bagging you. dont make me cry. :'(

Yes they should be banned because why should just teens be singled out. everybody can be dangerous behind the wheel with a cell phone at hand.

Why do we need a law banning cell phones? Don't we have a law called inattentive driving? That would cover texting and talking on cell phones, both handheld and handsfree. Studies have shown that there is little difference in the accident rate between the two. Don't believe there is a need for the age either. I've seen idiots both young and old on their cell phones not paying attention.

Cell phones? Driving

Talking on a hand held cell phone (or texting) should 100% be banned for any age person while driving! Every single day some one almost hits me while chatting on their phone!

Hell no

I feel cell phones should be illegal while driving! I don't feel any age restrictions should apply. The police are not going to be able to tell a persons age or even race for that matter from behind you? I've been hit from behind twice by people using the cell phone. Also text messaging is even worse because they are looking down to see what they are texting! Yes, Let's start ticketing these people!! And to Shawn from Colo Springs. It's not up to the police to decide this, They only enforce it! So stop blaming the police for everything. Our police department works very hard and is very unappreciated for the work they do!!!!!

Yes please! the drivers here in Wichita are so busy doing everything but driving.

Yes, there should be a law in Kansas regarding the use of cell phones without a hands free device. California passed a law about 10 years ago stating the use of cell phones without a hands free device while your car was in motion was illegal. The age statute wasn't in place and that would be hard to enforce anywhere. A lot of the younger generation, under 18, look older than what they are. And some older folks, 20-25, don't look as old as they really are. If age was a factor in who was legally allowed to drive while talking on a cell, the police would be really busy pulling A LOT of drivers over and having to card them just as if they were buying alcohol or tobacco.

Cell phones should not be used by anyone under or over 18 when driving. I have experienced this first hand. Mother, kids and cell phone. Not a good combination. I was driving down Douglas and a woman in a mini van with 3 kids and her cell phone to her ear cut me off as she pulled into the main traffic from a gas station. She then decided that I was to blame for the "almost" accident and made a rude gesture out her window at me. Too much attention has to be paid to a cell phone. Eating a bag of chips doesn't require attention. Hand to mouth. Speaking on a cell phone means you are NOT paying attention to what's in front of your car/truck. Only work based need for constant contact should be allowed cell phones while driving...and then only if its a blue tooth ear piece that does not require you to hold the phone.

I fully agree with your viewer Crystal. Cellphones should be banned while driving. Cellphones are the number 1 cause of accidents in America. The police don't think so but the police don't know nothing to begin with. I don't see how driving a vehicle while on the cellphone is safe. I usually change cds while driving but do it safely. Like I said at the start of this comment there are alot of people here in the Springs who talk on the phone while driving. I also think eating while driving should be looked at. How can you eat a cheeseburger or fish sandwich or whatever while driving? It's immpossible.

I honestly think driving while on a cell phone should be banned. People don't pay attention to the cars around them, and that is when accidents happen. I see people driving while on their phones everyday, and they don't pay attention. so it shouldn't just be teens, it should be all ages.

People driving while on the cell phone is my #1 pet peeve. I don't have a cell phone my wife carries it with her and she does not talk on the cell while driving. I would love for it to be a state law that no one is allowed to talk on their cell and drive for all ages. It is not that hard to pull out of traffic to make or take a cell phone call.

I would love it if they would ban using cellphones while driving. I don't think we should eat while we drive either and I am guilty of that one. I do not talk on my cellphone while I drive and I refuse to answer my cellphone while I am driving. I pull into a parking lot or along the curb on a side street.

Posted by: Jon I just wonder how the police are going to be able to tell the age limits in from 18 to 19 yr olds. I don't care for those types of laws, it seems like too much government cont. peoples lives.
