How old is old enough to babysit?

In the past few weeks there have been 2 babysitting related fatalities in the news.  The first was the case out of Florida where the 12 year old boy reportedly beat a little 17 month old girl with a baseball bat.  Then just days later, here in Wichita, a 24 year old was arrested for the death of an 18 month old boy while in her care.  She says the toddler fell off the couch.  Doctors say his injuries weren't consistent with that story.

What I want to know is when is the appropriate age to allow someone to start babysitting?  Obviously it depends on their maturity, and the age of the children who are being watched.  But are there any good guidelines to follow?

And my next question is how much is the going rate for a good babysitter?  I'm not talking about daycare, which I understand is very expensive...I'm just talking about 4 hours on a Saturday night or something like that. I guess for right now my little ones will keep going to the grandmas.  I know we are very blessed to have so much family around, but I would like to give them a break some day and stories like these make me nervous.

As always, thanks for your thoughts!  See ya Saturday morning!

When family mambers are not available, I have a set of sisters that we pay 8 dollars an hour -- it is quite expensive, but worth it. They have accountablility and an extra set of hands so my child is never unattended. (They are in 7th and 5th grade.)

We have three kids - seven and under. We are charged $5 an hour with a minimum of two hours pay. I think it's great. We've had girls that don't want that much but we think it's fair. We also do special gifts for our babysitters for occasions and bring them back souveniors when we've been gone. It's a hard job and we want to show them respect so they never feel used or abused by us or our children.

One of my good friends has 2 daughters. 1 is 17 and the other is 13. The 17 yr. old takes new jobs by giving the parents references and also by her and her mother going over to meet the family; to have the time to get to know more about each other and the surroundings they are in. The family was pleased with this arrangement because then they knew a little more about her and her family. The 13 yr. old has done some babysitting and in trying to take on a new family, the mother felt because she is so tiny in size, they needed someone older, so they asked the 17 yr. old to babysit. Both girls make sure they have all the necessary phone numbers. I do not know how much the rate is for them. It is a blessing for those who can have grandparents take care of the children and I am sure most grandparents feel like it is a blessing for them to be able to do so.
