Sex Education In School

My last Mommy Monday segment was on sex education in schools and other community organizations.

HERE'S SOME INFORMATION FROM A RECENT STUDY DONE BY THE JOURNAL OF ADOLESCENT HEALTH. THE MAJOR FINDINGS IN THE STUDY,  INCLUDE TEEN GIRLS WHO RECEIVED SEX ED HAD A 59 PERCENT REDUCED RISK OF HAVING SEX BEFORE AGE 15 -- COMPARED WITH THOSE WHO DID NOT GET SEX ED.
TEEN BOYS WHO RECEIVED SEX ED HAD A 71 PERCENT REDUCED RISK OF HAVING SEX BEFORE AGE 15 -- COMPARED WITH BOYS WHO DID NOT GET SEX ED.

I know this is a very controversial subject.  Let me know what you think..

Have a great week!
Jemelle

HOW COME MOM AND DAD CAN'T JUST TELL THEM SAVE IT FOR MARRIAGE. HAVE THIER CHILDREN BE AROUND GOOD DECENT YOUNG PEOPLE THAT DID SAVE THENSELVES FOR MARRIAGE AND SHOW THEM THE GOOD RESULTS. IT SHOULD BE PRETTY OBVIOUS. SHOW THEM PEOPLE ON THE OTHER HAND WHO ARE STRUGGLING WITH ALL THE PROBLEMS IN LIFE BECAUSE THEY "JUMPED THE GUN". HAVE THEM BE AROUND GOOD DECENT KIDS THIER AGE AND KNOW THIER PARENTS. LET THEM KNOW THERE ARE GOOD DECENT YOUNG PEOPLE OUT THERE THAT WILL LISTEN AND SAVE THEMSELVES FOR MARRIAGE. KEEP DOING THIS OVER AND OVER AGAIN. LET THEM KNOW THAT EVEN GOOD LOOKING KIDS AND YOUNG ADULTS WHO DON'T DO DRUGS AND SMOKE BUT ARE SEXUALLY ACTIVE ARE STILL WRONG. DOING ONE OF THESE IS JUST AS BAD AS DOING ANY TWO OR ALL THREE, AND YOUNG ADULTS WHO ARE SINGLE ARE NOT ROLE MODELS FOR YOUNG PEOPLE IF THEY THE YOUNG ADULTS ARE SEXUALLY ACTIVE BEFORE BEING MARRIED. THAT GOES FOR PEOPLE UNDER 21 AS WELL AS PEOPLE OVER 21. FAIR ENOUGH!

I agree I think parents need to step up and start talking to thier kids at a very young age about sex. Age appropriate of course. I have a 10 year old and ever since she has been old enough to ask questions I answer openly and honestly with her and there is no awkwardness with us about the subject. She probably knows more about sex than most kids her age and I for one think its sad that it is a subject that is so hard for parents to talk about. If you talk to your kids they aren't going to be so curious to find out what its all about, and maybe they can make an educated decision on when the time is right for them.

Posted by: mari When 1 in 4 girls has an STD something is wrong. Sex ed is very important, something that has to be taught by the parents and by the school at a very young age. There are wrong messages being sent from all over. Sex ed should include everyhting from STD's, to pregancy, birth control and abstinence. Do not assume teens are not having sex, if they abstain grat, but if they choose to be sexually active they need the most accurate information: abstinence best, condom use the best to prevent both STD's and pregnancy.

Posted by: Jon I think that parents should have more of a role. However, I do know that there are some parents that sadly just don't care. Schools should just go over the basics of sex ed and not try to force one view over another.
