A few days ago, I was going through an old box of stuff my dad had left in storage. Buried deep inside one of the old cardboard boxes was a letter. It was addressed to my dad and was dated February 11, 1958.

It was from John Froome. Froome is arguably the most well known and talented KAKE personality. He helped put channel 10 on the map from it's early days in the 50's, up until his death in the 1970's.

The letter is typed on old KAKE TV letter head and it is signed by Froome. It reads..

Dear Harvey:

Thanks for your letter to Nightwatch. About a week ago we had a good airplane picture on, but, I'm afraid, Harvey, that it's pretty hard for us to get one particular type of film on short notice.

Thank you again for writing to us and I hope we can please you with a flying tiger picture real soon.

Yours Friend,

John Froome

I found the letter on Tuesday. A few days later, I happened to run into John Froome's son Chip. I haven't seen Chip in several months, but just two days after this "lost" letter appears, Chip and I cross paths. I told him about the letter. He want's to see it.

It's just crazy how things happen. It does feel a little strange working in the same building where John Froome wrote a letter to my dad 51 years ago. Strange, but good. I'm going to have the letter framed and displayed on my small desk in the KAKE newsroom. I think Froome would like that.

Yes, somehow as a child, I always felt safe when the 'Ol Cobbler was speaking to me on TV in the afternoon. God Bless John.

Thanks for posting this about the grandfather I never got to know. It's nice to know that he lives on in the memories of others. I'm glad that things were recorded in film for my cousins in I who missed out on knowing such a talented man.

Igrew up in Wichita in the fifties and sixties. John Froome was the man we knew would keep us safe from tornados and enlighten us with a variety of things he did at KAKE. I don't get to Wichita very often, all the old teachers, tv personalities and other people who give me childhood memories are dead now, but while I'm here I always think of those dear people.
