Did you see the big flathead caught by Gabe Hine from Concordia last weekend? There are some impressive pictures on the KAKE Braggin' Board. He told me it weighed 120 pounds. The current world record flathead, which was caught in Kansas, weighed just over 123 pounds. Gabe tells me he was fishing for bass in a farm pond using a spinner bait on 17 pound test line. I'm not going to doubt Gabe. He sounded like an experienced fisherman when we spoke on the phone. But, he told me the fish measured 52 inches long and 37 inches in girth. Documented flathead catfish with similar measurements all checked in at about 78 pounds. We will never know the "official" weight of Gabe's monster, because he cleaned it before calling the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks. But it makes for one very impressive fish story!
Gabe's awesome fish got me thinking about how close we are to "fair weather" fishing season. It also gets our 2009 KAKE Braggin' Board off to a great start. I hope that most of you will send in your fish pictures this year. It doesn't matter how big the fish are, we just want to showcase you and your fish. Or better yet, your kids fish!
