My father .. the one known to local machine shops as Harv .. turned 60 a few days ago. A life long Kansan until 2007, he now lives in Woodbury, Minnesota. Woodbury is to St. Paul, MN as Derby is to Wichita. I made the drive to the land of 10,000 frozen lakes last weekend to surprise my dad. It was a good time. We played his new favorite sport .. Wii bowling. We also watched several fishing shows. I'm sure outdoor activities would have been included ..but it was 6 degrees. That's 6 BELOW. Everyday, 6 BELOW. This isn't wind chill. Throw in a light breeze ..and it's 24 BELOW. If you walk slowly in the shade ..your eyelids freeze open. You walk around all day looking wide awake and surprised.
Like every person who has ever once lived in Kansas and moved away, the weather conditions at their new place of residence are NEVER as bad as Kansas. My dad kept saying things like, " 6 below here doesn't feel like 6 below in Kansas." ..or, " The air is different up here, so when it's cold, it's not like Kansas cold." He also said, "we don't have the wind here, so it's not as cold." He would usually tell me these things as I was trying thaw my car battery with a hair dryer or chisel my tires free from a thick coating of ice in the driveway. It's funny, because I can't remember a day in good 'ol Kansas where it hurt to breath. I can tell you with 100% accuracy, that in Woodbury, MN on January 25, 2009 at 1:45 PM .. it hurt to breath outside.
In all, I enjoyed the trip. Minnesota is one of my favorite states. My dad ate most of his fish birthday cake and beat me soundly every time we played fake bowling on the Wii. Good times. Happy Birthday dad.
