Last week, a group of dangerous storms popped up around Wichita just in time for game 6 of the NBA finals between Dallas and Miami. As you can imagine, many people were extremely unhappy with us for covering up the first 30 minutes, or so, of the basketball game with severe weather coverage. First, these weren't your average Kansas thunderstorms. There was the real possibility that a tornado could have dropped out of any of those storms in a moments notice. A storm to the west of Wichita made a classic "right turn" and had a very good looking hook on the bottom of it. Both of those are textbook signs of a tornadic thunderstorm. However, for some unknown reason, Mother Nature didn't drop a tornado to the ground. Yes, it was a false alarm. I can't tell you how many times I've heard the "I would love to be a meteorologist so I can get paid to be wrong" argument. I'm so tired of that bogus line. But anyway, given the circumstance of the dangerous storms that were moving through Wichita, we made the right decision to cover up the basketball game with the urgent weather info. I wonder if the storm DID drop a tornado and those who may have been watching the basketball game got hit, they'd be the first ones to complain that they had no warning, wouldn't they? |
