This whole TV picture camera stuff is quite different than what I grew used to for many years. For all of my years at KFDI, I just opened up the microphone and started talking. It didn't matter if I had shaved that day. I could wear jeans and a T-shirt and nobody would ever know! Heck, I admit I even chased a few storms in the middle of the night wearing shorts with holes in them and a raggedy shirt I threw on in a hurry. But now it's all different. Is my tie straight? Did I get all the wrinkles out of my dress shirt? Does my hair look OK? I've been getting to report more and more in recent weeks. I love getting out in the field and meeting new people and making new relationships with sources throughout the state... and reconnecting with the sources I made and came to rely on back in the old days. When we have breaking news and all of our reporters are out in the field, I'll sometimes jump in front of the newsroom camera during newscasts and report the information I've gathered straight from the assignment desk. I'm always looking for constructive criticism, though. It's sometimes hard for me to remember to keep looking at the little black hole in the camera. I'm so used to talking based on the scribbled notes I've written down on a notepad. I want your feedback. How am I doing? Lay it all out on the line. I want the good and the bad. I'm a firm believer that there is always room for improvement, for sure. |
