A friend of mine just emailed me a video clip on YouTube. It is of the 1993 PBA Wichita Open bowling tournament held at Northrock Lanes. That was the very first assignment I was ever given as a rookie reporter working for KFDI radio in Wichita. I've always had a serious interest in the sport of bowling, so I jumped at the chance to cover the event. What transpired in the title match of that tournament went into the record books as Mike Aulby defeated David Ozio 300-279. As far as I can tell, that 279 game remains in the record books as the highest losing score in a PBA tournament. The atmosphere in that bowling center that day was every bit as invigorating to me as being able to watch a National Championship college basketball game or a World Cup soccer final. Here is the link to the video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YhidwWHFYj4 At about the 2:50 mark, there I am in the second row of the audience just to the left of Aulby's shoulder. I was 19 years-old at the time, although the buddy who pointed out the clip to me says it looks like I was about 10! I once dreamed of being on that stage as a professional bowler. I guess I still do sometimes. Jeff Herndon, eat your heart out. You know you're jealous! :-) |
