I got to thinking that we sure have seen a lot of snow this winter, but then when I looked up the statistics, it really hasn't been that much. I guess it's just that the snowfall we've received this year hasn't come as often as usual, but all at once.
In Wichita, the average annual snowfall total is 16.7 inches. We are above normal this year and could receive more snow by the time winter is over. As of February 21st, Wichita's snowfall total since December 1st is 18.5 inches.
Dodge City will also probably end up surpassing their average annual snowfall this year by quite a bit. Since December 1st, Dodge has received 19.2 inches of snow while their annual average is 19.8 inches.
Just up the road in Goodland, however, the story is much, much different. Goodland's average annual snowfall total is a whopping 41.8 inches. But so far this winter, they've received just 24.5 inches of snow. So, while Goodland has received more snow than the rest of the state, they are way below their normal total.
On another subject, I was kinda bummed that most of us around Wichita didn't get to see either the space shuttle sighting or the lunar eclipse this past week. Mother Nature didn't cooperate with us very well. I heard from someone in Hutchinson that there was a break in the clouds just in time for the shuttle and space station viewing. He described it as about as bright as a star, but clearly moving across the sky. That would have been a neat sight!
By the way, the next lunar eclipse won't be visible in Kansas until 2010.
