Here We Go!

Spring time marks the beginning of severe weather season in KAKEland! Nothing like getting things started on Oscar night!

This past Sunday marked my very first severe weather day in Kansas since moving to Wichita.  I think every meteorologist gets that sense of excitement when the storms begin to “pop” on radar!

Lucky for me severe weather, and the threat of tornados and large hail is nothing new.  From growing up in Colorado, to attending school in Missouri, to working in Texas for the past two years, I understand the severity of how fast weather can change especially in the spring. What is new to me is the entire WeatherPlex and severe weather mode at KAKE television.  Every television station has a different set up and different procedures to follow when the severe thunderstorms are in the viewing area.  Getting used to new counties and a new radar and graphics system that I don’t have much experience using will surely be put to the test in the next few months. I’m lucky enough to have some extremely smart and well-versed meteorologists to learn from.

I’m hoping for a safe and thrilling severe storm season ahead.  Hopefully everyone has their  “storm plan” drawn out if the thunderstorms are close.  Thank you for being patient while I learn the ropes of KAKE.  I’m looking forward to keeping everyone safe and informed especially when the weather turns severe!  Here we go…
