Over the years I have had my fair share of embarrassing moments on camera as well as off camera. That is always one of the first questions that I get asked during public talks; what tops the list of most embarrassing moments at work? I thought I would compose a list of my top five. We can all laugh together!
1.) I’ll start with my first day on air EVER. Driving from Columbia, Missouri to Jefferson City to do the morning show. Not only did I get pulled over at 2am for having a burnt out tail light… I also got the ticket. Half way through the show, the heel of my shoe broke. Nice first day, huh?
2.) I can’t even begin to tell you how many words I have flubbed on air. Little sleep + morning show = interesting made up words. Please tell me how much frozen frog we can expect in the morning?
3.) For some reason, I can’t seem to stay on my feet. If you didn’t know, the WeatherPlex has several steps in it. We must travel from the Chroma key to the desk during the weather segments. I have fallen over the steps many times. The ultimate was falling down off the anchor desk steps after the main weather forecast and watching Larry Hatteberg keep a straight face. He will never let me live that one down.
4.) Morning show birthday names. That one explains itself. I apologize in advance for slaughtering those. At least you get a free lunch in return for putting up with my phonetic guess on how to pronounce your name (which I’m sure is wrong about 92% of the time.)
5.) The latest moment was during my main weather segment just a week or so ago tripping over my shoe, which then fell off, which I then strategically put back on. I bet no one even noticed… until I Facebook & Tweeted it! Thank goodness for DVR… everyone could rewind and watch it again and again!
The moral of the story is to not take life too seriously. What makes an embarrassing moment isn’t too funny at the time… but sure makes a great story later. Thanks for laughing with me! Happy New Year! I’m sure 2013 will bring more funny/embarrassing moments, brought to you by yours truly!
