32 days of temperatures 100 degrees or warmer and counting… is summer over yet?

I think it’s safe to say… it’s been an abnormally hot summer in Kansas!

Now this is my first year in Kansas and it has certainly been a toasty one!  I’ve lived in Colorado almost my entire life, New Jersey for a few years, Missouri for college, just recently North Texas, and now Kansas.  I can honestly say that I can’t remember a hotter summer!

Maybe it’s because I’m out of school now, and officially a meteorologist that I’m realizing how much this heat affects people.  I feel so bad for all those folks that work outside in the heat everyday.  On my way to the gym every morning I pass several areas of road construction and can’t help but think how miserable those workers must be feeling. Over the past few months I've noticed an elderly gentleman who lives at the retirement home close to our station. He sits outside in the shade of a large tree enjoying the afternoon.  Even he must think it’s too hot since I haven’t seen him the past few weeks. Not to mention, my little Chihuahua (Zoey) also hates the heat.  We always joke that her ancestors are from Mexico… if anyone should be able to handle the heat it’s her.  Everyday when we go for a walk, she nose dives into the grass just to get the sun off her little back.  On top of that, I swear her tongue gets longer and longer with each degree of warmth. It’s pretty cute…

Everyone is talking about the heat.  Even my Grandma that lives in St. Louis mentioned that we’ve made national news with all the records that have been broken this season.  I’m quickly learning the best way to beat the heat, is to avoid it all cost!  Who’s ready for winter??  A foot of snow sounds pretty nice right about now!
