Even if you subscribe to cable or satellite, you may have considered adding an antenna for those times that your service is interrupted, due to severe weather, etc.

Using set top antennas, or “rabbit ears”, for digital television can quickly lead to frustration, unless you live within line of site of the transmitter.

So, you made the decision to install a permanent TV antenna for years, or even decades, of free DTV service. Now you ask…What type do I need? Can I mount it in the attic? Do I need a pre-amplifier?

The more informed before you purchase, the better the chance of a satisfactory outcome.

A great place to start is http://www.hdtvprimer.com/ISSUES/erecting_antenna.html

Check the additional links under “Antenna Issues”. There is a wealth of knowledge covering every aspect of TV antenna design, selection, and placement. Yes, for those not technically inclined, it’s drinking from a fire hose. But, if you dig through the links re-reading a few pages, I think you’ll become a more confident consumer.

After you become RF savvy, needing to find out just how far away…and in which direction the TV transmitters are from you try http://tvfool.com/

Here you can get estimated signal strengths for your exact address.

Please share your antenna selection and installation stories, both the successes and failures…and what you learned along the way. Good luck!

Jay, you were right. The button below my channel search on the remote turns the CC on. Very easy to fat finger the button. Thanks for your help and patience.

Are you sure that CC is turned off on BOTH the converter box, and the analog TV? I have two analog TVs at home with DTV converter boxes...and no, they don't have this problem.

Jay thanks for trying to answer my question about the block out box on my older tv. (you can re-read my post just below yours here)My closed caption is off. Do you have any other suggestions as to how to get rid of this block out box? Again, this isn't happening on my newer digital tv, just my old sets. I could take a picture of it for you and send it to you or if you have an old set somewhere plug it in so maybe you can see what I'm seeing. It happenend during the View today but not the noon news. It seems to happen only during shows.

It sounds like you have "closed captioning" turned on...on the converter box. CC1 is the normal text feed...you may have CC2 selected, which would explain the Spanish and occasional gibberish.

I use antenna to my converter. Converter feeds a 17 yr old tv and a 1 yr old digital HD flat screen. My old tv has just started blocking my view after about 5-10 seconds of first viewing your channel with a black square box that blocks about 40% of the screen. It's not happening on other channels except I noticed fox is doing the same thing. Commercials come on and that box goes away. It comes back when the show starts back up. It acts just like a pay per view block. This isn't happening on my digital tv. A while back I kept getting Mexican language tickered at the bottom of a show. Sometimes, just gibberish was being tickered. Almost like a child on the key board. Again, not on all channels and not on the digital tv at all. Any ideas? Can an older analog tv get hijacked so to speak?
