Recently, well, over the course of the last three years, I've been doing story after story about football players injured so severely their careers are over. One player broke his leg, it became infected, he lost his leg. Three other players.. concussions, some so bad, they had bleeds on the brain. All could have died.
So, here's my dilemma... My little boy Jake, who is now seven, is Mr. Sports. If it involves competition and/or a ball, he's all about it. I know I'm a "little" biased, but that kid is so coordinated! Anyway, he loves football. He's been playing flag for three years and will start tackle next year. YIKES! That's when a mom really starts to, well, FREAK OUT!
I watch him dive, slide and jump as he goes for the catch...and the flag. I am now picturing him in a helmet to helmet tackle, lying on the field not moving. As a sports fanatic myself, the girlfriend of a high school football coach, I find myself torn. Do I or don't I continue to support Jake's dream of playing for the Chargers??? I'm thinking maybe tennis or golf is a better sport?
