As a television reporter, we meet some very interesting people, who say some very interesting things. Over the years I've met politicians, rich people, poor people, amazing children, and those people whom I will never forget.
Today was one of those days. Her name, Carolyn Abbott. She is an elderly woman who lost her apartment to a fire. We saw her sitting at a small table in the parking lot of her burned out building smoking a cigarette and covered with soot. She was shouting to a fire investigator who was inside her apartment--asking him to bring out her medicine and her money she had stashed away, if he could find it. He stood at the window looking down, holding up a bag... "Yeah, that's it, cuz," she shouted. He smiled and brought down her items. (she'd been in trouble earlier for going behind the hazard tape, into the charred apartment)
I asked her if she would do an interview on camera. She was more than willing, explaining in the middle of the night her smoke detector was going off, then she smelled smoke. Then she said she walked outside and her neighbor she says was yelling,"burn, baby, burn". So Carolyn "hit her in the mouth" and they both rolled down the stairs. Carolyn told me she not only lost her glasses and all her clothes she bought at the "big women's" store, but her false teeth. She was mad, really mad.
As we drove away, I glanced back. She sat there alone, looking so sad. Poor woman.. but I know she'll be fine. With a personality like that, she'll bounce back.
