The State Board of Education is going to be talking about whether to require teachers to teach cursive handwriting to students.

I guess I never really thought about the issue until recently. My mother's handwriting was perfect, flawless and very distingtive. Recently I found her journals from her junior and senior years in high school. She died almost 20 years ago, and as far as I can tell, those diaries haven't been open in probably 50 years.

Long story short.. I was incredible to see her handwriting, and to read her thoughts! I feel as if I know her in a more intimate way, if that makes sense.

I showed the diaries to my ten year old Josie. She too was in awe, but there was a slight problem. She couldn't read it. She asked me to read it. I felt so awful for her. Come to find out, her school does teach cursive writing and reading, I think she just prefers printing.

I know everyone uses text and computers, but I still think it's important to be able to read and write in cursive.
