While we are very friendly with our "friends" over at the "other" stations, we aren't that friendly when it comes to getting the story.
Our goal is to scoop the other stations by getting the interview no one else gets, or the "money" shot they don't have.. and while you as viewers probably don't flip around to see what those other stations are reporting, (you better be watching KAKE News only) we do. Every day we monitor what they are leading with, what they don't have that we have and how their reporters are covering the story. People often ask me, "how did you get that interview?" I have to be honest and say, many times it's being at the right place at the right time, and sometimes, it's just luck.
It doesn't happen often, but when "they" have something we don't have it's very frustrating, especially when we have asked professionally and politely for the interview and we are told no, only to find out the other guys have that interview. As reporters, remember, we are just doing our jobs, by getting the news factually out to our viewers.
It is a team effort, and we want to win, but not at the expense of hurting anyone (except the other guys) :)
