KU Wins-A Wildcat Fan's Perspective

OK, so the Kansas Jayhawks are the National Champions in basketball. That's great! I'm excited for them and for all of us as Kansans. As many of you know I am a huge K-State fan. No I didn't go to college there, but my brother and both my sisters did. It's in my blood.  If K-State is playing KU, I'm going to support K-State, but when KU is playing someone else, I will cheer for the Hawks.

Many KSU fans though aren't so loving. Check this out. It's a quote and part of an article out of the Kansas City Star. "Kansas State sophomore Levi Holmes said the conference's first title comes at too high a price for K-State fans to be excited about it. 'I absolutely hate KU,' Holmes said. 'Nothing irritates me more than watching Sasha Kaun celebrating at center court. 'I'm glad that (the Big 12 has) a championship now, but I can't stand that KU is responsible for it. This is just something else for them to rub in our faces.' "

So it begs the question... why can't KSU fans support KU and vice versa? KU represents Kansas, and as citizens of this great state we should be proud of our team. Right? It gives us a good name. It takes away from all the weird, negative news that has been hitting the national airwaves lately.  To hear K-State grad Senator Pat Roberts chanting "ROOOOOOCCCKKKK CHAAAAACK JAYHAAAAAWK KKKKKKUUUUUUUU" on the Senate Floor on Capital Hill Tuesday has to make you proud... right?????

As a K.U. fan I'm glad they won the championship..and would have rooted for the Wildcats if they played further in the tournament. I was sad to see Beasley go pro. Glad to see K.U. doing well in both football and basketball this year, since I don't get to see them much. Keep up the good work Deb...from a former softball teammate you knocked out once in the outfield.

I'm a K-State fan myself, but KU was representing the state of Kansas, so I think we should be proud that they led our state to a championship. Don't get me wrong, if was K-State and KU, I'm rooting for K-State, but it sounds to me like Mr. Holmes is jelous. He should just be proud that a Kansas team won the championship.

I put K-state and missouri in same boat let them sink.

To the blogger who said that all KU fans are arrogant, the same could be said about most of the K-Staters that I have met. Truth is, there are some in every group. Unfortunately, they give the rest a bad name. I support K-state whenever they aren't playing KU. The only time this year that I wanted them to lose was when it was going to affect whether KU won the Big XII. If the Cats had been in the title game, I would have broke out the purple for sure. As it is, I wore my Crimson and Blue and enjoyed every minute of it. Rock Chalk Jayhawk!!!

OK. Now that you said "represents Kansas, and as citizens of this great state we should be proud of our team" I will come out of my closet. I too support all schools Kansas (and it drives my hubby crazy) but here is my breakdown: KState football, KU basketball, and WSU basketball. My hubby is a Friends grad. So all Friends stuff, go Falcons! I am so proud to be a Kansan.

I am proud of KU. They did a fantasic job. However, the reason some people won't root for "The Princeton of the Prairie" is because of their arrogance. Remember how ignorant they acted 2 years ago when they did not make it past the first round in the NCAA and WSU made it to the Sweet 16? Most KU fans were green with envy and refused to support the Shockers. They are sore losers and cannot stand for anyone to be in the limelight but them. Yet, they want everyone else to support them. I don't recall KSU and WSU acting this way toward each other. One more thing, KU could make peace with these 2 universities by discontinuing calling them Silo Tech and Hillside High. The rest is Self explanatory!

I lived in Topeka for 12 years and am a die hard Shocker fan. I wasn't much of a KU fan when I moved there but it is nothing compared to the contempt I feel for KU now. The Wichita KU fans are OK but all I can remember is how hateful KU fans are in that part of the state. It was KU and no one else; absolutely no room for anyone but Jayhawks. So, we are supposed to support KU? After 12 years of the Topeka KU fans, I don't feel any obligation to KU whatsoever!

I'm a longtime Kansan and KU fan. I attended KSU's first appearance in the Cotton Bowl, and felt great pride as thousands of Kansans gathered to celebrate the Wildcats success. I cheered when Wichita State won the College World Series and reached the Sweet Sixteen. KU's NCAA title puts the entire state in the spotlight. If you don't want to be part of the celebration, feel free to sit on the sideline.

Would you hear a North Carolina fan routing for Duke? How about a Stanford fan routing for Cal. Why should any KSU fan feel obligated to rout for a hated rival because of the piece of land they choose to call home. Rock Chalk Chickenhawk BOO KU!

I have ALWAYS been a wsu fan, I am excited for KU, but I have not always felt that way. Groing up in samll town Kansas and rooting for the Shockers Kinda forces you to have a tough skin to the KSU and KU fans, But I am willing to give credit where credit is due. Congrats KU and what a wonderful, heartbreaking, inspiring story Darnell Jackson is!! This team is deffinatly very deserving of this win, it was an awesome game to watch. So congrats Jayhawks, that may very well be the last time I ever say that!!!

A friend of mine (who is a KSU alum) told me that many years ago when KU was playing the Soviet Union that he thought he could root for KU but low and behold within the first 2 minutes he was rooting for the Soviet Union. For most K-State fans, we are alumni or attended school there, we don't have the fair weather KU fans so the rivalry runs deep in our blood.

If K-State can not get there then lets cheer for KU

Its not the KU Alum that give KU fans a bad name it is all the bandwagon fans. You know the guy that wears the shirt, sweat pants and hat that has never been to Lawrence, yet is the first person to start mouthing off to someone wearing another schools colors. These people are the reason I will never cheer for KU. Learn to show some class bandwagon fan and maybe the rest of us will not laugh at you behind your back so much.

I am a KSU fan, but both my husband and son are KU fanatics. I think it's important to support Kansas teams whenever they have the opportunity to make Kansas look good on the national scene. Whenever there's a Kansas team participating in a nationwide broadcast event you listen to the national pundits and commentators and they almost always favor any team other than Kansas, so it's important for all Kansans to stick together.

Posted by: Jon I know several people that feel the very same way about KU, as that K-State fan. I am a KU fan and if we were out of the running I would hope and K-State still had a chance I would root for them to win a NCAA Championship Title. I think a people aren't as willing to root for an in state rival like KU and K-State anymore.

I have never been a fan of KU as knowing some of the people that have graduated from there or go there seem to be conceited and think they are better than others. I, too; am more of a KState fan. However, I really did enjoy watching the Jayhawks this basketball season and I am thrilled that they are the Champs. I love to see any teams from Kansas be successful in Sports. (I don't consider Dave Phillips as one of the conceited KU grads).
