Here is a really basic Vlog about how to shoot a VO (Voice Over, video with reporter/anchor talking over it and no soundbites).  While it gives you a general idea about how you may shoot a VO, it was done quickly and I could have added several points and other shots as well but I didn't want anyone to fall asleep watching this.  The point is to sequence your shots, wide, medium and tight.  Then when you edit you will typically go between those shots of the various parts of the "scene" or event.  Remember when you're starting out to shoot a lot of "cut aways" which are tight or extremely tight shots.  Try not to shoots pans, pushes or pulls when you're first starting.  And also if you notice, there isn't a single dissolve or cross fade in the editing.  If you cannot edit together a VO without using a dissolve, its because you aren't shooting it correctly.  If you see a dissolve in the middle of a VO or package and it doesn't transition between and change in time, scenery or in/out of a sound bite then the person is simply trying to cover a mistake...or just lazy.

So I hope this gives a little of an idea of how a photographer may approach a simple voice over.
