I'm killing time in the Sports Office until after the 4 pm show today so I can tape something for KAKE News at 6 (yes, it's a dirty little secret... not EVERYTHING is live). Anyway, I figured I might as well do something constructive to spend the next 20 minutes... besides, I've already checked my email, facebook and espn.com about 5 times in the past 10 minutes... here goes
Alan Shope just told me that the KU football team is (6-0) in their red jerseys over the past 2 1/2 years... that's unfortunate considering I haven't heard a single Jayhawk fan tell me that they think those things aren't ugly... something tells me you'll be seeing more red next year... yikes! Then again, it could be worse. When I worked in Arizona, we constantly heard rumors that Oregon was secretly working on a special camoflouge uniform with their pine green and "lightning yellow" color scheme... luckily that never happened.
I'm sick of hearing people question how much Brandon Rush is shooting. Let the team play! They've got good balance and Brandon will come around. Bill Self has to be kicking himself for even bringing it up after the Loyola game. Now it's all anyone wants to talk about. Rush dropped a season-high 19 against Nebraska and reporters were STILL asking Self about at today's Big 12 teleconference... there's GOT to be something more interesting to talk about when you're covering a team that averages 84 points per game and wins by an average margin of 25!!!!
K-State appears just fine living and dying by Mike Beasley and Bill Walker. I'd still be worried after Saturday's road win at OU, though. I know Llloyd Noble Center is a tough place to play, but Beasley and Walker combined for 54 points against the Sooners and K-State STILL barely won. Here's the encouraging thing: The game-winning play was well constructed and well-executed. I think that play alone was a legit sign that Frank Martin is getting better at X's and O's and the players are getting better at running set stuff instead of playing street-ball. They needed a clutch basket off a set play to win the game on the road and they got it. I know that sounds like baby steps, but when you're team is made up of primarily FRESHMAN, that's exactly what you've got to do... take baby steps.
One more quick note before I go be on TV: The OTL writers strike thing on Sunday night was just a joke...we were watching the Golden Globes in the office on Sunday night and we decided to make light of Hollywood's current situation... we actually don't have "writers" beyond Dave, Producer Abby and myself... we right the show... and we would NEVER go on strike! You viewers are just too important to us!
