I love a good catch phrase, but, as with most things, they only work in moderation. Today is day one of The British Open and I am bracing myself for one of the most over-used phrases by sports-broadcasters. That's right, you guessed it..."Across the pond." Now I admit, I like that phrase. It's a good, creative description and most people know instantly where you are referring to. This is one phrase that is no longer looking for you to "catch on," it has already been caught. As much as I appreciate my man Boomer, his broadcast of the Home Run Derby was, at times, worn out. His "Bermanisms" are sometimes clever and witty, but I've never heard so many "cruise" references in one 10 minute span as I did for Nelson Cruz. Somewhat on the same note, I know it's not really a catch-phrase, but it frustrates me when people use the word "interesting." If it's a truly interesting story then great, but if it's not and you're only using it because you just don't know how else to respond, as a broadcaster you should leave it be and move on to the next topic. There are so many more "caught" phrases that get under my skin, but I've said my peace...so I'm passing the talking-stick. What phrases do sports broadcasters use that you wish they, or we, didn't? |
