Fly the low-cost carriers. Check with AirTran, Frontier and Allegiant - their prices are often (not always, but often) cheaper than the legacy carriers. Always check airfare prices with all carriers, but neglect to check the “cheap” airlines at your peril. When booking a flight, compare the airlines’ ancillary fees, as those differ from airline to airline.

Many people do not know this, but not all of AirTran’s and Frontier’s fares and schedules can be found on all booking engines. For complete schedules and fares on those airlines, go directly to their websites: airtran.com, or frontierairlines.com, where you can also avoid paying a booking fee. The booking engine at flywichita.com also displays all airlines’ fares and schedules, for a minor booking fee of $10, which includes 24-hour travel agency support.

Be Flexible. If you are willing to be flexible with your travel dates, you can save big. Sign up for the Hot Fares e-mail alerts at flywichita.com to find a great fare, and then ask for the time off.
