With the flu season in full swing, it’s time to protect your baby from getting the bug.

Doctors recommend young children receive a flu shot to prevent the virus from spreading. Good hygiene habits can also help fight the flu.

But if your child does get sick, it can be difficult for parents to identify flu-like symptoms. Doctors say babies battling the bug may be lethargic, and have a poor appetite. Other symptoms include onset fever, chills, breathing problems, runny nose and a dry cough.

Dr. Sid Sivamurthy, M.D., said children under 2-years-old, who become infected with the virus, are more likely to be hospitalized.

“The flu is known to hit these kids hard, treat them accordingly,” he said.

If you or anyone else is your family becomes sick, doctors suggest staying at home, sleep, and drink plenty of fluids.
