Increased oil and gas exploration in western Kansas has led to a surge in people seeking oil and gas leases and doing land title searches in Ford County.

The interest has increased so much that the Ford County Government
Center has had to limit the number of people doing searches at one
time. It also started renting laptops to those who can't fit into a document room.

Register of Deeds Brenda Pogue says her office received 1,262 documents related to oil and gas leases by late December, compared
with 781 in 2010.

County Administrator Ed Elam says the interest is driven by an increase in oil well development in western Kansas in the last 18 months.
