Florida Aircraft Company Looking For Wichita Workers

Friday, November 20, 2009 Florida-based Piper Aircraft is in Wichita this weekend, hoping to recruit up to 50 aerospace engineers willing to relocate to the Sunshine State. A spokesperson says the company is expanding its PiperJet project and hopes to add over 100 positions in the coming year. It's no secret Wichita's aviation industry has taken a hard hit in the current economy, with thousands of workers being let go in recent months. "Some of the best talent in the world sits right here in Wichita," says Bob Brewer, SPEEA's Midwest Director. Brewer says he doesn't want to see the city lose any of its aviation workers, but understands many are facing difficult times. City leaders say Wichita's extensive pool of skilled and experienced aircraft workers make it a prime recruiting location for other companies. "We have one of the finest institutes to train these engineers," says councilman Jeff Longwell. He believes it's a compliment to the city's aviation industry that companies looking for employees "recognize this is where you come," he said. Despite a rough year, officials say Wichita is beginning to see its own opportunities emerge. "I think things are starting to stabilize here," says Brewer. This month, Cessna announced the callback of 200 employees as the company ramps up production on the Citation CJ 4 and Sovereign business jet. In October, Airbus announced it's considering expanding offices in Old Town and hiring an additional 100 workers. Brewer says we're not out of the woods yet, but believes we're starting to see the light. And he thinks a majority of Wichita's aviation workers are willing to wait. "There are a lot of things that attract people to Wichita," Brewer said. "Once they get here, a majority of them like to stay." Representatives for Piper Aircraft will be at the Broadview Hotel until 6:00 Friday night, and again from 9:00 - 6:00 on Saturday. If interest is high enough, officials say they'll extend interviews into Sunday. Those wishing to be scheduled for an interview can e-mail their resumes to wichitajobjair@piper.com.
