Thursday, November 19, 2009 Dodge City Man To Stand Trail For Shootings A Dodge City man will stand trail for killing one man and wounding another. A judge ordered Wednesday that Samuel Bonilla go to trial for shooting two men on Labor Day in the Arkansas River riverbed. He is charged with second degree murder and attempted second degree murder. Tanner Brunson, who survived the shooting, said Bonilla shot him and Steven Holt after a confrontation. Bonilla's attorney argued that Bonilla was acting in self-defense. No date for the trial has been set at this time. GCPD Sees Increase In 'Huffing' The Garden City Police Department reports they are seeing an increase in teenagers abusing inhalants. Often referred to as "huffing", it's where teens inhale fumes of volatile chemicals or substances and has a dramatic effect on how they behave. Aerosol sprays, gasoline, and spray paint are just a few of the items that police are seeing abused. They encourage parents to learn more about the issue and talk with their children about the dangers of huffing. It's Confirmed: Small Rock Is A Meteorite A scientist has confirmed that an object that fell into a Liberal backyard is a meteorite. Ten-year-old Chandler Harp heard the black rock fall from the sky while playing outside. Don Stimpson, a biophysicist from Haviland, saw the rock this week and says it's a meteorite. It likely came from the sun's atmosphere and fell as far as 100 million miles. The meteorite is two inches in diameter and weighs 47 grams. Stimpson also says it could be worth more than $4,000. WKS Corn Harvest Well Behind Schedule Western Kansas farmers are seeing an excellent corn crop this year, but they're having trouble getting it harvested. The National Agriculture Statistics Service reports that only 68% of corn has been harvested. That's well below the five-year average of 93%. An unusually wet October put the harvest behind schedule. Then the weekend snow and cold temperatures added fuel to the fire. However, recent warm and sunny afternoons have allowed farmers to get back on track. New Addition To Garden City YMCA The Garden City Family YMCA announces a new addition to their facility, the Y-express. It's a room that features a new 12-piece circuit training workout system that uses hydraulics as resistance. The Y-express also includes a vertical knee-raise, two punching bags, and two spinning bikes. All the equipment was donated by Kenny and Shirley Spanier. You can find the Y-express upstairs in the racquetball mezzanine.
